The Story of The Guest House

What is Family Reconciliation? And why is a place like this needed in Nashville?

Since 1984, Family Reconciliation has been serving inmates and their families in the Nashville area.

Who We Are

For more than 30 years, Family Reconciliation has served individuals and families affected by incarceration. Family Reconciliation is a nonprofit guest house located in Nashville, TN, that provides a free place to stay for loved ones visiting area inmates.

What We Do

Nashville is home to three prisons—Tennessee Prison for Women, Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility, and Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. As Nashville enjoys the fruits of its recent economic boom, finding affordable lodging in the city has become increasingly difficult. As a result, many inmates’ loved ones are unable to afford to visit as often—and some are unable to visit at all.

Family Reconciliation Center’s Guest House ensures that those who wish to see their incarcerated loved ones will not be prevented due to economic barriers.

The Guest House has five bedrooms, and each room can accommodate multiple guests, allowing families as well as individuals to stay in a comfortable and safe environment while visiting their loved ones. Each Saturday night, the Guest House also hosts a free community dinner for all guests—a weekly highlight for those staying in the house. The House also provides coffee and pantry items, a communal living and dining room area, WiFi for personal devices, a community desk and computer with internet access, and a fenced-in backyard with a children’s playground set.

Why It Matters

Studies consistently show that prisoners who maintain close contact with family members while incarcerated have better post-release outcomes and lower recidivism rates. As noted in one study released by the Urban Institute:

“Family support was the most frequently cited reason why men believed they had been able to stay out of prison—this was true one month, six months, and one year after release….having a helpful family increased the likelihood of employment and close attachment to children decreased the likelihood of substance use." (2007)
