National Volunteer Month

When I was growing up, my parents did lots of volunteer work. They didn’t brag about it, they didn’t complain about how busy they were, they didn’t want any recognition. They just did it. They set an example for me and my three sisters as they quietly stepped in to help civic organizations, youth groups, and people in need.
I thought about them when I saw that April is National Volunteer Month, and I also thought about the many volunteers who help run the Family Reconciliation Center. We have no paid staff — volunteers keep our guest house clean, make repairs, launder and change linens, cook meals and, most important, make our guests feel welcome and cared for when they come to visit their loved ones in prison.
This month we celebrate all those volunteers who give of their time and talent. Spread the joy — thank your favorite volunteers and tell them what a difference they make in the lives of others. - Sheri Sellmeyer
